Installing Drupal

Drupal installs from the Softaculous Apps Installer in cPanel like any other platform. The part that deserves attention comes earlier: the installer lists three different things under the same name, and picking wrong costs you a migration later.

Which Drupal

What you see What it is, and who it is for
Drupal 10 Current Drupal, bare: it starts empty and you assemble it. This is the default choice for a new project. Wants PHP 8.1 or newer.
Drupal CMS The same Drupal, already assembled: modules, content types and the usual configuration are done for you. It saves days for anyone who wants a website rather than a project. Wants PHP 8.3 or newer, and takes considerably more disk.
Drupal 7 and older series Still in the list because old sites need them for a migration. Do not start a new project here.
Torn between the first two? Install both on a subdomain. Half an hour tells you which one speaks your language, and you delete the other. See setting up a test site.

What Drupal asks of your account

Good news: of the serious platforms, Drupal is one of the few that needs no extra PHP extension at all. Everything it asks for is already switched on for a new account. What you do have to check is the PHP version, changed in Select PHP Version: see changing your PHP version without breaking the site.

Installing, step by step

1 Sign in to Meu Interweb at https://www.meu.interweb.ao, open the plan and click Log in to cPanel.
2 Under Software, open the Softaculous Apps Installer, search for Drupal and choose between Drupal and Drupal CMS.
3 Pick the version and the address. Protocol on https, the domain you want, and an empty directory field to install at the root.
4 Create the administrator account. A username that is not admin, a long password from the password generator, and an e-mail address you actually read.
5 Under Advanced Options, switch on automatic backups. With Drupal it is worth leaving automatic upgrades off until the site is built: its updates touch database schemas, and you want to watch those happen.
6 Install. Keep the two addresses it gives you at the end: the site, and the way in, which in Drupal is /user/login.

The first few minutes

1 Check https and the padlock. If it is missing, the causes are here.
2 Create the scheduled task. Drupal needs background jobs to run: search indexes, update notices, cleanup. See cron jobs.
3 Turn the error display down. A Drupal printing PHP notices onto the page is telling strangers where its files live.
4 Take the first backup before the first module goes in. See backing up the files and backing up the database.
In Drupal, files and database travel together. Restoring only the database over newer files, or the other way round, gives you a site that boots and then fails halfway. When you take a copy, take both at the same moment.

Keeping it

In the Softaculous installations list, Drupal 10 offers upgrade, clone, backup and change admin password. Drupal CMS has fewer buttons, being newer in the catalogue: backups still work, and upgrading is done from inside Drupal itself.

For what every installation has in common, see installing a ready-made platform. If you are still choosing a platform, see what a CMS is.
