Which hosting plan for a small company website with its own e-mail

A small company’s website is usually a brochure site: a few pages, a contact form and mailboxes on the company domain. That fits a shared plan, often one of the first steps. What tends to decide the plan is not the site, it is the e-mail: how many people, how many mailboxes and how much they send.

The four questions, in order

1 How many people have e-mail? Every mailbox keeps its messages on the same disk as the site. Teams that keep years of mail with attachments can use more than the whole site. When e-mail is the serious part, see the comparison in e-mail inside a hosting plan or a separate professional e-mail plan.
2 How much do they send? Each plan has a ceiling on messages per hour, so that one compromised mailbox cannot ruin the server’s reputation. Invoices, confirmations and automatic alerts add up quickly. Your plan’s figure is in the plans table.
3 Does the site do more than present? With a client area, bookings or a shop it has become a different project. See which hosting plan for a site where visitors log in.
4 Who maintains it? A company site should not depend on one person who forgets to renew or update. On a shared plan the system and its security are on our side; the content upkeep is yours.

A shortcut: what to pick for which company

Situation Where to start
One or two people, a site of a few pages One of the first steps. See Pro, Plus, Ultra or Business: choosing without guesswork.
A team with several mailboxes and e-mail used every day A plan with more room for disk and sending, or a professional e-mail plan on its own.
A company with more than one brand or domain A plan that counts sites. See several websites on one plan.
A site with lots of photos or downloadable documents More disk, and attention to how files are handled.

What the plan does not do for you

The plan looks after the server and the system’s security; it does not write or update your site. A company site left alone for years, with WordPress and plugins out of date, is the favourite target of automatic attacks. Set aside a moment each quarter to update, and check that backups exist and that you know how to restore them. See making and keeping your own backup.

The e-mail address should not belong to a personal account. Customer messages in one person’s free mailbox get lost when that person leaves. Mailboxes on the company domain stay with the company.
Is the site already somewhere else? The move is done without taking it offline. See moving your site to us.
