Which hosting plan for a portfolio or photography site

A portfolio asks for little processor and plenty of disk space and well-handled images. Images define it: each one is a large file, and a gallery turns into dozens of files per photograph. Choose the plan by the disk and by how the images are served, not by the number of visits.

What counts on an image site

Point What to do
Disk space Add up the originals you will publish, the versions the site generates and any copies you keep. E-mail uses the same disk. Your plan’s figure is on the plans page, and what you use shows in cPanel.
Number of files Each uploaded image produces several thumbnails. A big gallery can exhaust the file limit with the disk half empty. See the limits nobody advertises.
Weight of each image A screen does not need the camera original. Publishing right-sized versions in WebP is what speeds the site up most.
Protecting the images Other sites can point at your images and spend your bandwidth. See hotlink protection.

How to decide, step by step

1 Do the space sums. How many photographs will you have in a year, and how big will they be once processed? Count the margin as part of the plan.
2 Process images before you upload them. Resize and compress. For a phone or laptop screen the full original is waste. The how-to is in image optimisation and WebP.
3 Keep the originals off the server. An external drive, or your computer with a copy. The plan is there to show your work, not to archive it. See making and keeping your own backup.
4 Consider a CDN if your audience is far away. It helps deliver images faster to people far from the server, but it is not mandatory. See what a CDN is and when it makes a difference.

Working out the space from your own material

Take a finished gallery, look in Disk Usage (the Files section of cPanel) at how much its folder takes, and multiply by the number of galleries you expect. That is your figure, and it is more reliable than any table. Remember that the thumbnails the site generates count, and so do the copies you leave in the account (a zip of old versions, an “old” folder).

The classic mistake: uploading photos at camera size and then buying a bigger plan because the site is slow. A bigger plan does not fix multi-megabyte images: processing them does.
Will you sell the photos or give clients downloads? Then the shop or the private gallery weighs more than the public portfolio. Treat it like a shop and see which hosting plan for an online shop.

Have a big gallery and unsure the plan will do? Tell us how many images and the average size, and we will look together.
