Installing Mautic

Mautic is a marketing automation platform you host in your own account: contact lists, forms, landing pages, step-by-step campaigns and e-mail sending. The difference from a monthly service is that the data stays with you, and so does the responsibility for sending it properly.

Read this before installing, because this is the part that hurts. Installing Mautic is easy; sending e-mail in volume from a shared hosting plan is not. There are hourly sending limits, and one badly prepared large send burns your domain reputation: after that, even your ordinary e-mail stops arriving. Read e-mail marketing without burning your domain and SPF, DKIM and DMARC before the first campaign, not after.

What to prepare first

Requirement What to do
PHP version Mautic wants PHP 8.2 or newer, and it also has a ceiling: it will not run above the version it supports. If you pick the very newest version available on the account, the installer may refuse. Stay inside the range it states: changing your PHP version without breaking the site.
PHP extensions You have to switch on intl, which arrives off on a new account. Enable it in Select PHP Version. The rest of what it asks for, including mailbox access, is already on.
Scheduled task Not optional. In Mautic, the thing that builds segments, advances campaigns and drains the e-mail queue is the scheduled task. Without it the platform opens, accepts contacts, and sends nothing. See cron jobs.
Space and files It is one of the heaviest installations by file count. See the limits of your account.

Installing, step by step

1 In cPanel, open Select PHP Version, choose a version inside the range Mautic supports, and enable intl.
2 Open the Softaculous Apps Installer and search for Mautic.
3 Address: protocol https. It is worth installing on a subdomain of its own, kept apart from the site: adding a subdomain.
4 Administrator account with a long password from the password generator.
5 Under Advanced Options, switch on automatic backups, then click Install.
6 Create the scheduled task immediately afterwards. That is the step that turns Mautic from installed into working.
The way into Mautic is not the root of the address. The installer shows you the exact panel address at the end, and keeps it in the installations list. Bookmark it.

Sending without ruining your domain

1 Publish SPF, DKIM and DMARC for the domain you will send from. Without them, a good share of the messages never reaches an inbox.
2 Respect the hourly sending limit of your plan. Mautic has throttling settings: use them to spread a large send across several hours, rather than firing everything at once and watching half of it fail.
3 Start small. First send to a few dozen contacts who know you. Watch how many open and how many reply. Only then scale up.
4 Clear out the addresses that bounce. Insisting on mailboxes that do not exist is the fastest possible signal that the sender does not look after the list.
5 Have consent from the people on the list, and an easy way out. Besides being what the law expects, it is what prevents complaints. See personal data protection.
If the volume is genuinely large, shared hosting is not the route. Two honest ways out: put Mautic on a server of its own, or keep it where it is and hand the sending to a dedicated delivery service, which it supports. See VPS, Cloud or Dedicated, and talk to us before signing up for anything.

Keeping it

In the Softaculous installations list, Mautic offers backup and change admin password. Back it up before every upgrade: its database holds years of contact history. For what every installation has in common, see installing a ready-made platform.
