Registering a .ao domain: at DNS.AO or through a provider?

DNS.AO is the national registry for the .ao zone, under INFOSI. That is where the zone is managed — which is why people ask whether to deal with them directly or go through a provider.

What DNS.AO is, and is not

The DNS.AO portal manages .ao, .co.ao, .it.ao, .org.ao, .edu.ao and .gov.ao, provides the whois and publishes registry news, including price campaigns. It also runs an application to become a Registrar of the AO Zone: that is how companies get accredited with the registry so they can register domains on behalf of clients.

What changes in practice

Directly with the registry  Through Interweb
The domain Registered in your name Registered in your name — the same
DNS management You handle it yourself Your own panel, records at hand
Site and e-mail On you, at another provider In the same place, if you want
Renewal You have to remember Automatic notices and an invoice
When something goes wrong You deal with the registry We deal with the registry
Price You may catch registry campaigns List price, in kwanzas

The honest answer

1 If all you want is to reserve the name and you have someone handling DNS, dealing with the registry directly is perfectly reasonable — and during a campaign it can be cheaper.
2 If you want the name working — site up, e-mail arriving, DNS managed, all on one invoice — a provider saves you the work you do not see.
3 If you registered directly and now want to simplify, the domain can be moved without the site going offline.

The domain is always yours. Whichever route you take, the registrant is your company. A provider handles the registration in your name — if anyone tells you the domain will be in theirs, be suspicious and read who is who in a domain registration .
