Reseller hosting or one plan per client: what suits a freelancer or agency

If you have three or four clients, one plan per client or one account with add-on domains is usually enough. Reselling pays when you have many client sites and want to run them all from one place, with each client in a separate cPanel account and your brand in front. The question that decides is not about price: it is who answers the client when something goes wrong, and who sends them the invoice.

Three ways to do it

Model How it works Suits you when
Add-on domains in one account All your clients’ sites live in your account, sharing resources and the same panel. Few clients, small sites, and total trust. It carries the risk described in several websites on one plan.
One plan per client, bought by each of them The client is our customer, pays their own invoice and has their own panel. You do the work on the site. You want the client to own what they pay for, and to be rid of billing.
Reseller hosting (WHM) You create the clients’ cPanel accounts, set what each gets, bill them and answer them. The infrastructure is ours. Many clients, and you want your brand and your billing. See becoming a reseller.

How to decide, step by step

1 Count the clients you have today and the ones you expect next year. Reseller plans differ in space and number of accounts; the current figures are on the reseller hosting page.
2 Decide who owns the relationship. With reselling, your client is yours: they pay you and talk to you. We handle the infrastructure. If you would rather the client deal with us, the model is one plan per client.
3 Think about billing. Whoever resells has to charge. There are tools to automate it, WHMCS for example, which is not needed at the start. See reseller hosting: starting out, pricing and billing.
4 Start small. Beginning at the lowest step and moving up as the accounts fill costs less than buying empty space.

Your brand and the nameservers

With reselling you can have nameservers of your own: the client points the domain at your name and not ours, and the brand in front is yours. With one plan per client, the brand is ours. If a client wants to leave one day, with one plan per client the account is theirs and goes with them; with reselling the site sits inside your reseller account, and leaving is a migration you carry out.

With reselling, support for the end client is yours. We answer for the infrastructure, but your client calls you. If you do not want to be available when a site falls over at two in the morning, one plan per client spares you that work.
Each account has its own files, its own user and its own panel. That is what gives isolation between clients, unlike add-on domains in one account. See how far our support goes.

Tell us how many clients you have and who should answer them, and we will say which model is simplest for you.
