Several websites on one plan: how many fit before you need the next step

As many as the plan counts and the resources can carry, and those are two different sums. The first is a matter of numbers: each plan says how many sites or add-on domains it includes. The second is a matter of weight: all the sites in the account use the same processor, the same memory, the same disk and the same mailbox space. Three light sites fit better than one heavy one.

What is shared, and what is not

Shared by every site in the account Separate for each site
Disk, processor, memory and simultaneous processes Each domain’s folder of files
The same panel (cPanel) and the same credentials Each one’s database (if you create one per site)
The backups of the whole account Each domain’s SSL certificate
The server’s same IP address Each domain’s mailboxes

Adding and keeping control, step by step

1 See how many sites your plan counts. The column is on the plans page, and not every step counts sites the same way. See Pro, Plus, Ultra or Business.
2 Add the domain to the account. The step by step is in how to add another domain or a subdomain. Each domain gets its own folder.
3 After the first month, open Resource Usage and look at the whole account’s usage. The panel does not split usage by site, so if one of them is much heavier, it is the one that fills the limit.
4 If one site is out of proportion (a shop, a members area), move it to a plan of its own. The others stop paying its bill. See changing plan.

Two examples, to see the difference

Three brochure sites with few visits fit comfortably in one account. A shop and a busy blog in the same account compete for the same processor, and when the shop peaks the blog slows down. The two cases ask for different things, and it is the weight, not the number of sites, that decides.

If one site in the account is attacked, the others are at risk. They all run as the same user on the server, so an infected site can reach its neighbour’s files. For clients’ sites or different people’s, separate accounts isolate better. See reseller hosting or one plan per client.
One failure takes them all down. If the account hits its resource limit, every site in it suffers at once, even the one with almost no visits. The more important they are, the more it pays to separate them.
